A check-engine light is a starting point, not an answer. A code reader tells you which circuit complained; it does not tell you which part to buy. We test the circuit, confirm the fault, and then replace the part that is genuinely bad.
That approach costs a little more in diagnostic time and saves a great deal in parts you'd otherwise have thrown at the problem.

What Happens In The Bay
- 01We read stored codes and the freeze frame data — the snapshot of conditions when the fault set, which is often more useful than the code itself.
- 02Then we test the circuit the code names, using live data with the engine running, rather than buying the part the code mentions.
- 03Where a component can be swapped to a neighbouring cylinder or circuit, we do that first: if the fault follows the part, the part is bad, and that takes minutes rather than guesswork.
- 04For mechanical faults we go to compression and leak-down testing, which tells us where pressure is escaping.
- 05You get told what we found, how we confirmed it, and what it will cost before any repair starts.
What Waiting Costs
A steady check engine light can usually wait a few days. A flashing one cannot — it means a misfire severe enough to be dumping raw fuel into the catalytic converter, which melts it. That is the difference between a set of spark plugs and a converter costing many times more.

- Engine scan diagnostics start at $125, and are waived with the repair — some exclusions apply
- Suspension diagnostics start at $65
- How long the fault takes to reproduce — an intermittent problem takes longer than a constant one
- Whether the fault is electrical tracing, which is slower than a straightforward component test

Most diagnostics are completed the same day. Intermittent faults sometimes need the car longer, and we will tell you that up front rather than after.

Common Questions
- The parts store read my code for free. Why do I need to pay for diagnostics?
- A free code read tells you which circuit complained. It does not tell you whether the sensor failed, the wiring failed, or something upstream is causing it. That difference is why people replace two or three parts and still have the light on.
- Is the diagnostic fee waived if I have the repair done?
- Yes on engine scan diagnostics, with some exclusions. Ask when you book and we will tell you plainly whether yours qualifies.
- My check engine light is flashing. Can I drive it?
- Reduce speed and get off the road. A flashing light means an active misfire that is damaging the catalytic converter with every mile. This is the one dashboard warning worth stopping for.
- Can you do a pre-purchase inspection on a car I am thinking of buying?
- Yes, and it is the best money in car ownership. We put it on the lift, check the underside for rust and accident repair, measure brakes and tires, scan for stored and cleared codes, and give you a written report.
