Most batteries die in winter but are killed in summer. Heat degrades the plates; cold is simply when the weakened battery finally can't turn a cold engine over. That's why a battery that seemed fine in September strands you in January.
We load-test rather than voltage-check. A battery can read a healthy 12.5 volts sitting still and still collapse the moment it has to deliver cranking amps. If the battery is sound, the fault is usually the alternator, a ground, or a parasitic draw — and we test for those rather than selling you a battery that won't fix it.

What Happens In The Bay
- 01We load-test the battery rather than reading its resting voltage. A sulfated battery holds a healthy 12.5 volts and still collapses the moment the starter draws current — a voltage check misses it entirely.
- 02Charging voltage is measured with the engine running, which should sit in the 13.5–14.7V range. Below that the alternator is not keeping up; above it, the regulator is overcharging and boiling the battery.
- 03We check AC ripple, which finds an alternator with a failed diode — it still produces voltage and passes a basic counter test, while quietly destroying batteries.
- 04Voltage drop across the cables, terminals and grounds is measured, because a good battery and a good alternator still fail if the connection between them is corroded.
- 05If everything tests sound but the car keeps dying, we test for a parasitic draw — something staying awake after you lock it.
What Waiting Costs
A new battery fitted to a car with a failing alternator or a parasitic draw will die the same way the first one did. That is the case worth diagnosing rather than guessing: if you have replaced a battery within the last year and it is happening again, the battery was never the problem.

- Is it my battery or my alternator?
- The most useful clue is what happened after a jump. If the car ran fine for the rest of the day, the alternator is charging and the battery is the problem. If it died again within minutes or as soon as the cables came off, the alternator is not generating.
- The parts store tested my battery and said it was fine. Why does the car keep dying?
- Counter tests routinely miss three things: an alternator with a failed diode, a parasitic draw, and voltage drop across corroded cables. All three leave both components testing 'good' while the car keeps going flat.
- How long should a battery last here?
- Four to five years is realistic in Ohio. If yours is older than that and has not been load-tested, it is worth doing before winter rather than after a no-start.
