2. 02Fluid level and condition are checked first — it is the cheapest possible cause and it is genuinely sometimes the answer.
3. 03Scan data, including transmission-specific codes and live data on a road test, tells us whether the fault is electronic or mechanical.
4. 04For engine faults, compression and leak-down testing identifies whether the problem is valves, rings or a head gasket, and where pressure is escaping.
5. 05You get the diagnosis and the quote before disassembly, and if the repair approaches what the car is worth we say so plainly.

What Affects The Price

• Whether the fault is electronic — a sensor or solenoid — or mechanical, which means disassembly
• Whether your engine uses a timing belt or a chain, and whether the water pump is belt-driven
• Access: some engines require substantially more labour to reach the same component
• Whether the repair is worth doing at all against what the car is worth, which we will tell you honestly

My transmission fluid says 'lifetime fill'. Does it really never need changing?

That means the life of the warranty, not the life of the car. Manufacturers design to a warranty period; you are the one hoping to reach 200,000 miles. For most cars 60,000 miles is a realistic interval, and less if you tow or sit in traffic.

I've heard changing the fluid on a high-mileage transmission will kill it.

There is a real mechanism behind that story and the wrong conclusion attached. If the clutches are already badly worn, fresh fluid can remove the last thing propping them up — but the transmission was already failing. If it is shifting fine, changing the fluid is straightforwardly good for it at any mileage.

Do I have a timing belt or a timing chain?

Check whether your owner's manual lists a timing belt replacement interval — if it does, you have a belt and the interval is real. Ask us and we can tell you in about a minute from the engine code. On an interference engine a snapped belt frequently ends the car.

Is this repair even worth doing on a car this old?
