One stops the car pulling and eating tires. The other stops the steering wheel shaking at 65. Paying for the wrong one is how people end up doing both twice.
These two get used interchangeably at the counter and they have almost nothing to do with each other. One is about the direction the wheels point. The other is about weight distribution around a spinning wheel.
Knowing which symptom belongs to which service saves you from paying for the one that was never going to help.
Balancing: weight around the wheel
A wheel and tire assembly is never perfectly even. There are heavy spots — a slightly thicker patch of rubber, the valve stem, variation in the wheel casting.
At parking lot speed you would never know. At 65 mph a wheel is turning around 800 times a minute, and half an ounce of imbalance turns into a force that shakes the whole corner of the car. The fix is small counterweights clipped or stuck to the rim to cancel it out.
Balance symptoms:
- Vibration that appears in a specific speed band, usually 55–70 mph, and fades above and below it
- Shaking felt through the steering wheel points to the front; shaking felt through the seat and floor points to the rear
- It comes and goes with speed, not with braking or road surface
- It showed up right after new tires were fitted
That last one is common. A wheel that was balanced with the old tire needs balancing again with the new one.
Alignment: the direction the wheels point
Alignment sets the angles at which the wheels meet the road, adjusted at the suspension rather than the wheel.
Toe is whether the wheels point inward or outward relative to each other, viewed from above. It is the angle that destroys tires fastest — a fraction of a degree of toe error drags the tire sideways slightly on every rotation.
Camber is the tilt of the wheel inward or outward at the top, viewed from the front. Too much of it wears one edge of the tire and nothing else.
Caster is the tilt of the steering axis. It mostly affects straight-line stability and how the wheel returns to centre after a turn.
Alignment symptoms:
- The car pulls to one side on a flat, level road
- The steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight
- Tires wearing unevenly — one edge, or feathered across the tread
- Steering that does not return to centre by itself after a corner
- It started after hitting a pothole or a curb
Note what is not on that list: vibration at speed. Alignment problems are constant. They do not appear at 60 and disappear at 75.
The quick sorting question
Does it change with speed? If a vibration comes in at a particular speed and goes away again, that is balance.
Is it there all the time? If the car pulls constantly, or the wheel sits crooked, or the tires are wearing unevenly, that is alignment.
Get both symptoms at once and you likely need both services, which is genuinely common after a hard pothole strike.
What each one costs you if ignored
Ignored imbalance is not just annoying. The repeated shaking loads wheel bearings, tie rod ends and shocks, and it cups the tires — which then causes its own vibration that balancing will no longer fix.
Ignored misalignment ruins tires faster than anything else. A bad toe setting can scrub a new set down to the cords in ten thousand miles. It also costs a little fuel, because the car is being dragged slightly sideways the entire time.
The order they have to happen in
This is the part shops get wrong and customers get charged for twice.
Worn parts first, alignment second. Aligning a car with worn ball joints, tie rod ends or control arm bushings is money thrown away. The alignment is set with the suspension in one position, and worn parts let it move somewhere else the moment you drive off. The car will be out of alignment again by the end of the week.
Any shop aligning your car should be checking for play in the suspension before it touches an adjustment. If nobody looked, the alignment was a guess.
Balancing goes with tire work. New tires, a repaired puncture, a rotation — the wheel came off the car and the assembly changed, so it gets rebalanced.
When to get an alignment checked
- After any hard pothole or curb impact, which around here means most springs
- When fitting new tires, so the new set does not get ruined by the old problem
- After replacing any steering or suspension component
- Once a year as a general check, or any time the car starts pulling
An alignment check is cheap relative to a set of tires. We measure all the angles and show you the readings before and after, so you can see what actually moved. If the tires are also cupping or vibrating, we will balance and inspect them at the same time — and tell you honestly if you only needed one of the two.
