Synthetic or Conventional? Read the Cap, Not the Advertising

Oil grade is a specification your engine was designed around, not a quality tier you upgrade. Here is what 5W-30 actually means and when synthetic is genuinely worth the money.

The oil aisle is designed to make you feel like you are choosing between good, better and best. You are mostly choosing between specifications, and only one of them is correct for your engine.

What the numbers mean

Take 5W-30. Two numbers describing viscosity — how readily the oil flows — at two different temperatures.

The 5W is cold performance. W is for winter, and a lower number means the oil stays thinner when cold, so it reaches the top of the engine faster on startup. This matters, because the large majority of engine wear happens in the first seconds after a cold start, before oil pressure is established.

The 30 is viscosity at operating temperature, around 212°F. Higher numbers are thicker films at temperature.

So 5W-30 flows like a 5-weight when cold and protects like a 30-weight when hot. That is the entire code.

Why thicker is not better

There is an intuition that thicker oil means more protection. For a modern engine it is usually wrong, and sometimes actively harmful.

Modern engines are built to tight tolerances with narrow oil passages, and many use variable valve timing systems that are hydraulically operated by engine oil through very small control galleries. Those systems are calibrated for a specific viscosity. Put 10W-40 in an engine designed for 0W-20 and the VVT phasers respond slowly or set fault codes, and the oil pump works harder to push thicker fluid through passages that were sized for something thinner.

Thicker oil is also slower to circulate on a cold start, which costs you protection at the exact moment you need it most.

The correct grade is on the oil filler cap on most cars, and in the manual on all of them. That is the answer. It is not a starting point for improvement.

What synthetic actually is

Conventional oil is refined from crude. The molecules end up in a range of shapes and sizes because that is what refining produces.

Synthetic oil is engineered so the molecules are uniform. That uniformity is where the real advantages come from:

  • Better cold flow. It reaches bearings faster on a February morning
  • Better heat stability. It resists breaking down and forming sludge and varnish at high temperature
  • Fewer volatile light fractions, so less of it burns off between changes
  • Longer useful life, which is what allows extended change intervals

Synthetic blend is what it sounds like — some of the benefit, some of the price.

When synthetic is worth paying for

When your manufacturer requires it. Many modern engines, particularly turbocharged and direct-injection designs, specify full synthetic. This is not optional. A turbo bearing runs hot enough to cook conventional oil into deposits that block the oil feed, and that failure mode is expensive.

Short trips. If most of your driving is under fifteen minutes, the engine never fully burns off condensation and fuel dilution in the oil. Synthetic tolerates that much better. This describes an enormous number of Columbus commutes.

Ohio winters and Ohio summers. Both extremes are where synthetic separates itself.

Towing or heavy loads. Higher sustained oil temperatures.

Higher-mileage engines you intend to keep. Better deposit control ages an engine more slowly.

When conventional is genuinely fine

An older engine designed before synthetic was common, driven on longer trips, in moderate conditions, with the oil changed on schedule — conventional oil does exactly what it needs to do. Changed on time, it is not a compromise.

The one thing that is a compromise is stretching the interval. Conventional oil in a modern engine at 10,000 miles is a false economy, and the sludge does not undo itself.

Two persistent myths

"You cannot switch back to conventional once you have used synthetic." You can. They are fully compatible and you can mix them. This story has been circulating since the 1970s and there is nothing to it.

"Synthetic causes leaks in older engines." Modern synthetics do not attack seals. What genuinely happens is that a better detergent package cleans out deposits that were plugging a gap in an already-hardened seal, and the pre-existing leak becomes visible. The seal was failing; the deposits were hiding it. High-mileage formulations include seal conditioners specifically for this.

The one that actually costs people engines

The filter.

An oil change is only as good as the filter, and cheap filters use less media, weaker anti-drainback valves and flimsier bypass springs. A failed anti-drainback valve lets the filter empty overnight, so every cold start begins with a few seconds of no oil pressure at the top of the engine.

Filter quality is not where to save four dollars. We fit a filter matched to the engine's specification on every oil change, use the grade printed on your cap, and check every other fluid while the car is up. That last part catches more problems than the oil change itself does.
