Brake fluid pulls water out of the air, and wet fluid boils. That is how a pedal goes to the floor on a long hill with pads and rotors that are in perfect condition.
Everyone knows brake pads wear out. Almost nobody thinks about the fluid pushing them.
Brake fluid is the one maintenance item where skipping it does not make anything squeal, grind or light up the dash. It just quietly gets worse until the day you need the brakes most.
Why the fluid goes bad without leaking
Most brake fluid is glycol-based, and glycol is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air. Not through a leak. Through the reservoir cap vent, through microscopically porous rubber flex hoses, through the seals. Slowly and constantly, from the day the car was built.
New fluid boils somewhere around 400–450°F. Fluid carrying 3% absorbed water boils closer to 290°F. Typical fluid in a car that has never been serviced runs 3–5% water after a few years.
What that actually causes
Brakes work because liquid does not compress. Push the pedal, the fluid moves, the caliper clamps.
Water vapour does compress. If the fluid at the caliper gets hot enough to boil the water in it, you now have a pocket of gas in a hydraulic line. Push the pedal and instead of clamping the caliper, you compress the bubble.
The pedal goes soft. Then it goes to the floor. Then it comes back fifteen seconds later once things cool, which is why people report it and then cannot reproduce it in the shop.
This happens on long downhill grades, in stop-and-go traffic on a hot day, and when towing. It happens with brand new pads and perfect rotors, because the pads were never the problem.
The damage you do not see
Water in the system also corrodes it from the inside.
- Caliper pistons seize in their bores, so one wheel drags and cooks its pad while the other does nothing
- ABS modules are the expensive one — internal valves and passages corrode, and an ABS unit is a four-figure part on a lot of cars
- Steel brake lines rust from the inside out, and Ohio road salt is already attacking them from the outside
A fluid flush is cheap. An ABS module is not. Most of the seized-caliper jobs we see started as a skipped fluid service.
How often
Check the owner's manual first, because the interval genuinely varies. As a general rule:
- Every two to three years for most cars, regardless of mileage
- Every two years if you tow, drive hills regularly, or the car lives outside year-round
- Annually for anything that sees a track
Notice that this is a time interval, not a mileage one. A car that does 4,000 miles a year absorbs moisture at the same rate as one that does 20,000. Low mileage is not a reason to skip it. If anything, a car that sits is worse.
Testing beats guessing
You can test brake fluid two ways, and both take a minute.
A moisture test strip dipped in the reservoir gives a percentage. An electronic tester reads the fluid's boiling point directly. Anything over about 3% water, or a boiling point under roughly 300°F, means flush it now.
Colour is a rough guide and nothing more. Fresh fluid is clear to light amber and old fluid goes dark brown, but fluid can look nearly clear and still be loaded with water — because water is clear. Do not judge by looking.
Getting the fluid type right
The number on the cap matters.
DOT 3 and DOT 4 are both glycol-based and mix safely, though DOT 4 has a higher boiling point. DOT 5.1 is also glycol, confusingly, and also mixes. DOT 5 is silicone and must never be mixed with any of them — it will not blend, and the result is unreliable braking.
Vehicles with ABS and stability control often specify a particular fluid for low-temperature viscosity reasons. Use what the cap says.
What a proper flush involves
Topping up the reservoir does nothing. The old fluid is sitting down in the calipers at the far end of the system, which is exactly where the heat is.
A real flush pushes new fluid through until clean fluid runs out of each of the four bleeders, working from the caliper furthest from the master cylinder to the nearest. Cars with ABS often need a scan tool to cycle the pump so the fluid trapped inside the module gets replaced too. Skip that step and the worst fluid in the car stays in the most expensive part of it.
