A cabin air filter costs about thirty dollars and takes ten minutes. Left in place for six years it strangles airflow, fogs the glass and smells like a basement.
Plenty of people have never heard of the cabin air filter, which is understandable — it did not exist on most cars until the late 1990s and it is hidden behind the glovebox on a lot of them.
It is also the single most common reason a perfectly healthy air conditioning system feels like it has stopped working.
What it does
Every bit of air that comes through your vents passes through it first. It catches dust, pollen, soot, leaves and whatever else the fan pulls in from the cowl at the base of the windshield.
Then it fills up. A filter that has been in place for four or five years in central Ohio, through pollen seasons and leaf falls, can be genuinely packed. We pull them out looking like felt, sometimes with whole leaves and seed pods and the occasional mouse nest behind them.
The symptoms nobody connects to a filter
Weak airflow that people diagnose as weak A/C. The air coming out of the vents is properly cold, there is just not very much of it. The compressor is fine, the refrigerant charge is fine, the fan is fine — the air cannot get through. This gets misdiagnosed as an A/C fault constantly, sometimes expensively.
Windows that fog up and will not clear. Defrost works by blowing a large volume of dry air at the glass. Restrict the volume and the defroster stops keeping up, particularly on damp mornings. This is the one that matters for safety.
A musty smell when the fan starts. The evaporator behind the filter is cold and wet by design, and it is a decent place for mould to grow. A saturated filter holds moisture against it and makes the problem considerably worse.
A blower motor that whines or fails early. The motor is working against a restriction every time it runs. Blower motors are not cheap, and they are much harder to reach than the filter.
Worse fuel economy in summer, marginally, because the system runs longer to reach the same cabin temperature.
How often
Every 15,000 to 25,000 miles, or annually, is the general guidance. Adjust for the conditions you actually drive in.
Change it more often if you park under trees, drive gravel or construction routes, have allergies, or spend a lot of time in traffic breathing other people's exhaust. Once a year in spring, after pollen season, is an easy rule to remember.
Do not go by looks alone. A filter can be grey and still flow reasonably; a filter can look moderately dirty and be almost completely blocked in the pleats where you cannot see. Mileage and time are more reliable guides.
Doing it yourself
On a large number of cars this is genuinely a ten-minute job with no tools.
The most common location is behind the glovebox. Empty the glovebox, squeeze the sides inward or release the damper arm so the box swings all the way down, and the filter housing is behind it. Some cars put it under the dash on the passenger side, and a few — mostly older European models — hide it under the cowl panel at the base of the windshield.
Two things to get right. Note the airflow arrow on the old filter and fit the new one the same way; backwards, it filters poorly and can shed collected debris into the system. And check the housing while it is open, because that is where the leaves and nests live.
If you are already paying for a service, having it done then costs almost nothing in labour since the car is there anyway.
Charcoal filters and what they do
The upgrade option is an activated carbon filter, usually a few dollars more.
It filters particles the same way, and additionally adsorbs odours and some gases — exhaust fumes, farm smells, the diesel truck you are stuck behind on 270. If traffic smells bother you, it is worth the difference. If not, a standard filter is doing the job that matters.
The related fix for the smell
If the musty smell persists after a fresh filter, the mould is on the evaporator core itself rather than the filter. That needs a proper evaporator cleaning treatment through the housing.
A habit that prevents it: switch the A/C compressor off but leave the fan running for the last couple of minutes of your drive. That dries the evaporator instead of parking the car with a wet one sitting in a dark box overnight.
